Many patients may be wary of chemical peels due to misleading information about aftercare and the recovery process. Recovery times vary based upon the strength of a peel but normally patients recover within a week or two.

During that recovery window, there are certain things you should avoid and certain things you should continue or start to do. Here are some things you should avoid after your treatment and some that can promote better results.

What To Avoid After A Chemical Peel

Your skin will be extremely sensitive after a chemical peel. Sun exposure should be avoided without the use of at least a 30+ SPF sunscreen, which will protect against UVA and UVB rays. Patients should also avoid exposure to heat sources as they may induce swelling. While most patients may return to their normal, daily activities after light to medium peels, they should avoid activities that cause heavy perspiration for the first 3 days.

The oils that result from sweating can block pores, countering the effects of the peel. Furthermore, excessive sweating could irritate the new skin. You will be given post-peel instructions regarding aftercare and recovery, but the use of any topical acne creams or other harsh ointments should be avoided for the first 5 days. Patients should avoid drinking alcohol for the first couple of weeks as this dehydrates the body and skin.

What To Do To Promote Healing

Your provider should advise you on approved moisturizers, cleansers, and ointments that will promote healing after chemical peels. Cold compresses may be applied to areas that are red or swelling; fanning the face or area treated may also provide relief. Generally, prescription pain relievers are not needed unless you received a medium to deep peel.

Over-the-counter relievers like Aleve or ibuprofen may be taken. Also be sure to drink a lot of water to keep skin hydrated and try to eat foods rich in antioxidants and vitamin C which regenerate skin cells. When cleansing the face, use a non-abrasive cloth and do not repeat more than two times in a day. Allow peeling to occur naturally, never pick at or remove shedding skin as this may cause scarring.
